NEW YORK — A new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation highlights the importance of access to affordable care, but it also questions whether insurance coverage is the best option for many consumers.
The report shows the average rate of claims for coverage for brand name, generic versions of brand name and generic versions of generic drugs has increased nearly twofold in 20 years. Generic drugs are the most widely used prescription drugs, followed by brand name drugs and then by non-brand name drugs. “Many consumers are concerned about the high costs and the difficulty in making affordable health care choices for many,” said David A. Leavitt, MD, director of the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Center for Health Care Policy and Management. “It’s easy to say, ‘Well, it’s the cheapest medicine, and now there are cheaper alternatives for everyone, but it’s time to move on.’”
The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that more than one in ten Americans has to get their insurance coverage through a private insurance plan. That figure, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, is $3,400 a year. A similar figure is available for the average copay for brand name and generic drugs.
